全ての毛が常に伸び続けているわけではありません。体毛の成長は3つの段階のサイクル（毛周期）があり、成長期→退行期→休止期と呼ばれます。毛の1本1本がこの周期を持って生まれ変わりを繰り返しています。
そして毛が皮膚の表面に出てきて伸び続けるのです。
栄養を盛んに吸収し、メラニン色素が多く作られます。この時期の毛乳頭は大きく、毛母細胞が活発に働いて、毛髪がどんどん伸びていきます。
その後細胞の分裂が停止し、抜け落ちる準備段階です。
メラニン色素の生成も停止し、毛母における細胞増殖が減少し、停止します。
最後は次の毛を作る準備段階です。
次の世代の毛の成長につれ、これに押し上げられて毛が毛乳頭から離れ、抜け落ちます
